Attention Clients:  Important change in implementation date for revisions to HHS and DOT workplace drug testing programs.

SAMHSA has postponed the May 1, 2010 implementation of the revised HHS Mandatory Guidelines for Federal Workplace Drug Testing Programs.  The new effective date is October 1, 2010.

The delay was issued to provide sufficient time for the DOT to evaluate comments and issue a final rule harmonizing its regulations with the revised HHS Guidelines in a time frame that will permit implementation of the rules at the same time.  This action is welcomed; it will allow HHS-certified laboratories to use the same testing and reporting procedures for Federal workplace and transportation workplace drug testing programs subject to DOT Regulations, avoid the confusion of administering regulatory programs with different requirements and will ensure fairness in treatment of employees subject to the rules.

A notice is posted in the Federal Register for publication on April 30, 2010.  The document is available at the Federal Register’s website:  Click Here

Description

  • Metals and Biological Monitoring - We offer testing for a wide variety of environmental and occupational toxins, including heavy metals, solvents, volatiles and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs).  Exposure can be monitored by testing for the target compounds, their metabolites or related biologic markers in biological specimens.  Heavy metal testing is performed by state-of-the-art inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) which allows broad spectrum metals analysis.
  • Emergency Toxicology - We offer emergency toxicology services 7 days a week/24 hours a day.  This program is designed to provide reliable and rapid laboratory support to the medical community when identification of drugs and poisons is important in making treatment decisions in emergency situations.   Our comprehensive screen identifies over 350 compounds and is available as a “stat” service when needed.  Preliminary results are available within 4-6 hours after receipt of sample.  This rapid response time is vital to clinicians and care providers who need accurate and timely clinical information to assist in patient management.
  • Forensic Toxicology - Medicolegal investigations are supported by laboratory results that provide comprehensive and quantitative information that may be utilized to assist in determining cause of death.  We conduct forensic toxicology testing under strict forensic guidelines that include maintenance of full chain-of-custody documentation during specimen receipt, testing and storage.  Our full comprehensive menu is available for this broad spectrum testing and our professional staff is available for consultation and expert testimony in support for our test results.
  • Therapeutic Drug Management – Drug therapy can be optimized by monitoring of serum, plasma, or whole blood drug concentrations. This reliable and practical approach improves efficacy, minimizes the risk of toxicity and shortens the time required to establish an optimal dosing regimen; improving patient outcomes while reducing costs.  Because we understand the importance of timely results to any TDM program, we provide results to clinicians within turnaround times required to facilitate clinical decisions. Our comprehensive menu of tests is continually expanding so that newly approved drugs can be monitored to ensure patient safety and treatment efficacy.
